Greg Wilson (Martin Freeman) is an ex-child star. At fourteen, he was a child magician. Precocious, smug, very punchable.The pinnacle of his career was the 1986 Royal Variety Performance, when he charmed the audience with his patter about his Mum sewing name-tags into the backs of all his tricks.One week later, his career is finished. During a phone-in on the Saturday morning kids TV show, Crikey Its Saturday!, someone rings in and calls Greg a fucking wanker on live TV. Its the ultimate humiliation. The caller has articulated what everyone is secretly thinking. Its a blow from which Greg will never recover.Twenty years later, Greg works in a leather sofa shop. The early promise of his life unfulfilled. Hes bored, unhappy, still hurting on the inside, forever wary of other people. In every human encounter lies potential humiliation.Even his boss, who looks about 13, treats Greg with utter contempt.But then Greg is recognised by a customer and asked for his autograph.

Comedy Showcase is a series of one-off comedy specials featuring some of Britain's fledgling comedy talent. Its format is reminiscent of the much earlier Comedy Playhouse. The format was replaced in 2012 by 4Funnies.

DJ Jake Cross is perfectly happy playing the music he likes in the late night slot at Completely Radio but when breakfast show presenter Lincoln Jones drops down dead Jake's manager wants him to take over, though it involves gimmicks and cheesy catch phrases alien to Jake. Initially reluctant a night out in the company of Ryan Gosling gives Jake some street cred and he agrees to take the job.

Channel 4's Comedy Gala is a British stand-up comedy benefit show organised Channel 4 in aid of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital. The gig is filmed live at the O2 Arena in London, and then broadcast later by Channel 4. An inaugural gala was held in 2010, while a second gala was held in 2011. A third Gala aired in May 2012. A fourth Gala was filmed on Saturday 18th May 2013 at O2 Arena.

With top talent, the 90-minute episodes, covering a wide variety of genres, aired under the title every fourth Monday at 8 p.m. ET for three seasons, beginning October 18, 1954. The final episode, the last of 37, was broadcast May 27, 1957.Showcase Productions, Inc., packaged and produced the series, which received seven Emmy Awards, including the 1956 award for Best Dramatic Series.
